Zenix Features.
Requirements:
- Zenix uses 1.5 GB of hard drive space.
- Ram :
- XFCE uses about 115 MB RAM
- Fluxbox uses about 85 MB RAM
The 32 bit version uses the PAE Kernel and so Zenix should
recognize up to 64 GB of RAM (assuming it is supported by your motherboard).
Window manager:
- XFCE is the "default" window manager.
- Fluxbox is also included and is customized for Zenix.
- LXDE may be included in future releases.
Security:
- Firewall - UFW (GUFW) is installed and active by default.
- AppArmor is configured with profiles provided from the
Ubuntu repositories if available, otherwise custom profiles have been included. Profiles are in enforce mode by default.
- Guest account - There is a guest account with the password "guest". This account is confined by AppArmor.
- Cryptkeeper is a GUI tool which allows
one to add, encrypt, and decrypt directories.
- KeepassX is a cross-platform application. It keeps private information
such as user names, passwords, etc. encrypted for portability.
"Creature comforts" - Applications typically not found in a "frugal" installation but often appreciated:
- Hardware manager , aka "jockey", is the graphical tool used in Ubuntu to manage hardware drivers.
- Network manager was selected over wicd as it is default with Ubuntu and generally works well.
- Update manager is included.
- Ndisgtk is a graphical tool to manage wireless drivers (graphical fornt end to ndiswrapper).
- ntfs-config is a GUI tool to configure windows partitions
(FAT and NTFS).
- PySDM is a GUI tool to manage partitions (graphical front end for fstab)
and will be added for the final release of Zenix.
- USB creator
- gdebi (graphical installer for .deb) will be added to the final release.
Web browser - Firefox 3.5.x
IM client - Pidgin was selected as Empathy is under development and Pidgin
has more features and plugins.
IRC clients:
- Xchat - if you like a gui alternate to Pidgin.
- Irssi - if you prefer a command line client.
Audio:
- Streamtuner - Streamtuner contains hundreds of links to web radio streams.
- Audacious - Default audio player and an Ubuntu theme for audacious is included.
Xfburn for CD Burning.
Squeeze is the default archive manager.
